The T/S State of Maine is the fourth training vessel to serve Castine’s Maine Maritime Academy. She was originally christened the USNS Tanner and was built for the Navy as a fast oceanographic research vessel in 1990. At 465 feet in length, the State of Maine is a formidable presence in Castine Harbor.

When the ship experienced an engine casualty in 1993, she lay idle for several years until she was converted into a sophisticated, high-tech teaching ship and renamed the T/S State of Maine. Men and women train aboard her for careers as licensed officers in the Merchant Marine, Coast Guard, and other maritime careers.

The T/S State of Maine was delivered to Maine Maritime Academy on June 6, 1997 and sailed her first training cruise with students the following week. Each year more than 200 midshipmen spend weeks aboard gaining valuable hands-on experience while sailing to ports around the world. The State of Maine is currently the flagship of the Maine Maritime Academy fleet of sixty training, research, and recreational vessels.
